The Journal Series

In The Journal Series, I create fused glass forms that resemble objects from my memories along with glass words quoting my thoughts from my journal. It’s a very time-consuming process. Glass is cut with tools, layered and arranged into an interesting design and then fired in the kiln.

We are often more careful when handling glass because it is fragile and could shatter. Words made from glass appear delicate as the human psyche. When I paint the self-portraits with oil, I push the space and the emotions of the portrait. The glass creates an additional layer or relief providing context of my thoughts per scene. While the painting technique is representational and more serious, I like the playfulness with the glass.

There are limitations to the medium when it comes to details. The forms are simplified, which gives them a child-like impression. The glass forms represent my personal belongings and the intrinsic value I place on them. While I may find these objects valuable, it may not hold the same weight to another being. The themes may be relatable as we find our own similar memories to reflect on aging and mortality.
