Carry Home With You

My paintings are a reflection of my personal perceptions of home. I have always been obsessed with the notion of home and how it is the creation of self.  I believe self is developed through the environment, location, circumstances, attitudes, friends, family, and parental action that play a huge role in shaping who we will become as adults. For my paintings, I was not interested in a particular place of memories but a recollection of the “idea” of home.  Attachment to the house by way a length of rope represents an umbilical cord; feeding the body nourishment, a spark of life, but at the same time, creates a heaviness, a burdensome weight of learning when to let go of emotional memories. Sometimes, we have to explore the dark hole inside of us in order to discover the light of self.

This series also expands on using mixed media to create a body as "home." It involves projected images of home onto the body and constructed houses out of balsa wood, mosaic, plexiglas and/or oil.
